In a survey conducted by The Eastsider, readers favored a total smoking ban on the Griffith Park golf courses.
Readers voted 142-28 for the historic tree-lined golf courses to be smoke-free, according to the “Puffing and Putting Poll” posted on the neighborhood news website.
Wildfire risk was the No. 1 concern. As one reader stated: “Not a golfer but don’t want to see the golf course and the park burn down.”
While there is a no-smoking policy throughout Griffith Park, smoking has been allowed on the golf courses. But now smoking is restricted to tee boxes and the fairways with promises of being enforced, according to the office of CD 4 Councilmember Nithya Raman.
For the past several years, LFIA has been advocating for the heavily-used courses to be no-smoking zones. LFIA recently sponsored new no-smoking signs, in conjunction with the Griffith Park Advisory Board, now posted in the golf course parking lots. Violators can be fined up to $1,000.
An earlier Eastsider article acknowledged LFIA’s efforts to eliminate smoking on the golf courses. “Griffith Park is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone and we believe smoking on the Wilson, Harding and Roosevelt golf courses, right in the heart of the park, presents too great a risk to our neighborhoods and the park itself,” LFIA was quoted in a statement.
