Fire Station 35 on Hillhurst is our neighborhood fire station, safeguarding Los Feliz and Griffith Park. During a recent visit, we were shocked to discover the unacceptable living conditions faced by our brave firefighters.
While the LAFD budget is consumed by the big-ticket items necessary for modern firefighting, less than 3% goes to improving fire station living areas. The 20+ firefighters who protect Los Feliz live at the station for four days at a time, rotating shifts, in deplorable conditions.
We witnessed falling ceiling tiles, windows that don’t open, and often-non-functioning air conditioning in their second-story dormitory—just a few of the horrors from our behind-the-scenes tour.
It’s time for LFIA, and all of Los Feliz, to rally behind the men and women who risk their lives to serve our community.
Our goals are clear:
- Replace the 75-year-old dormitory ceiling, which often drops tiles onto the firefighters’ beds as they try to sleep.
- Fund the purchase of a new commercial-grade washer/extractor, a health necessity that not only launders clothes but also removes the carcinogens firefighters collect during firefighting calls.
- Upgrade to functioning air conditioning and windows that open—essential amenities, especially as the weather gets hotter, that our firefighters need and deserve.
We want well-rested firefighters responding to emergencies in Los Feliz, whether it be a home, a business, or a wildfire in Griffith Park.
Please make a donation to help us make these much-needed improvements possible. Your contributions are an investment in the protection of our neighborhood and are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
And here’s some exciting news: LFIA is matching the first $10,000 in donations!
Our objective is to fund these efforts by August 31st. Let’s come together to support our brave first responders!
