On Thursday morning, November 17th, the corner of Franklin and Vermont Avenues was christened Forrest J Ackerman Square. Best known for his magazine “Famous Monsters of Flimland” and credited with coining the phrase “sci-fi,” Ackerman was an avid collector of science fiction, horror and monster movie memorabilia which he shared with legions of enthusiastic fans over the years. A life-long Angeleno, Ackerman lived at 2495 Glendower Avenue during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Towards the end of his life, he relocated to a bungalow on Russell Avenue, a short walk from the new Forrest J Ackerman Square.
The dedication was a cool, over-the-top event attended by neighbors, Ackerman fans and at least one monster. LFIA board member Alex Kondracke was acknowledged for her tireless efforts by Councilmember David Ryu at the morning’s dedication ceremony. Thanks go to Michael Locke for documenting the event.
