background
In the late 1980s, LFIA began a survey of the 5,000+ properties in the neighborhood that included detailed records and property descriptions along with property photos and, when available, anecdotal or factual cited material. The survey featured architecturally notable residences and buildings in the Los Feliz district, some dating back to 1900, and in recent years census data has been added.
We’ve transferred all this survey data to a user-friendly interactive map & property search allowing easy access to anyone curious about Los Feliz and its past. There’s lots to find including:
- The work of famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and his Mayan Revival Hollyhock and Ennis Houses, and America’s first steel-framed residence, Lovell Health House, designed by Richard Neutra;
- Accounts of the early Hollywood workforce, including silent film stars, writers, costumers, filmmakers like Cecil B. DeMille and Walt Disney, and others who once called Los Feliz home;
- Improbable architectural hybrids (Dingbat/Spanish or Craftsman/Tudor Revival);
- Sixty-plus Historic-Cultural Monuments
There are two ways to explore: Browse the Map and Search by Keyword, described below. The map uses Google Maps, so the format will probably be familiar to many.
