The Los Feliz Improvement Association (LFIA) has launched a “Save the Deodars” campaign to fund the preservation of the historic and majestic mature evergreens that line Los Feliz Boulevard from Riverside Drive to Western Avenue.
The 334 trees, named Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments in 1970, were first planted as seedlings between 1922 and 1934 by LFIA founder William Mead and the Los Feliz Woman’s Club. They have been of special significance to the LFIA and to the Los Feliz community ever since. Now these trees are in urgent need of care and pruning.
LFIA must raise $100,000 for the most immediate essentials to preserve the trees that have become a symbol of Los Feliz. Ultimately, arborists have estimated that as much as $500,000 might be required. The LFIA plans to raise the additional amounts over the next 20 years or more.
“Our goal is the save the deodars,” said LFIA president Chris Laib. “Historically, the city has pruned and cared for the trees every five years, but this has not been done in recent years due to budget shortfalls.” A recent evaluation by arborist Ron Lorenzen from the Los Angeles Urban Forestry Division specifies that immediate attention to over 270 of the deodars and other tree varieties along the boulevard is critical to preserve the trees and protect public safety. Tree Preservation, Inc. cites that, “Many of these trees pose a safety hazard to pedestrians, vehicles, public and private property.”
LFIA has pledged to raise the majority of the funding needed through community events and special appeals. More than $5,000 has currently been raised. “We have a long way to go, but LFIA is committed to making a significant gift to the residents of Los Feliz. And we urge everyone in the community to participate in saving our beloved deodars,” said Laib.
Founded in 1916, LFIA, a nonprofit organization, is the oldest continuously operating residents association in the City of Los Angeles. Through the years it has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments to benefit Los Feliz.
