Author April Dammann, author of “Corita Kent. Art and Soul. The Biography,” will be the featured speaker at the Architecture&Beyond Lecture Series Thursday, Oct. 15, 6:45-7:45 p.m. at the Los Feliz Library, 1874 Hillhurst Ave.
The biography recounts the creative life and spirituality of the woman who rose to fame as Sister Mary Corita during the tumultuous 1960s. She is remembered by many for her art classes at the former Immaculate Heart College in Los Feliz, where she taught her students the relevance of art as a bridge for human connectedness. Her message was Love, Peace, Joy and Godliness.
The “Rebel Nun,” who never was outspoken, left her religious order in the late ‘60s. For the next two decades, she approached politics from a totally humanistic standpoint and was recognized for her profound messages. In 1985, the U.S. Postal Service commissioned her to design the “Love” stamp, which became one of the most popular stamps ever issued.
Skylight Bookstore will be on hand for the selling and signing of Dammann’s new biography on Corita Kent. The free lecture series, now in its 11th year, is supported by the Friends of the Los Feliz Library and merchants of the Los Feliz BID.
