History:
Dr. Leland E. Stilwell was the Manager of Iowa City’s Veterans administration after being clinical director and chief of professional services at the Veterans administration in Jefferson Barracks, Missouri for six years. Doctor Stilwell then went to Los Angeles, where he went Into private practice in obstetrics and gynecology. He also worked as a part time member of the faculty of the University of California medical school. He entered military service in February, 1941, and following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December of that year, he took command of the 128th general hospital as it was being prepared for an overseas assignment. This hospital unit was moved from its California’ base to England, where it operated for one year. The new hospital manager’s next assignment was at Camp Crowder, Mo. While he was preparing a hospital unit for transfer to the Pacific theater of war, the Japanese surrendered and hostilities ceased. He then entered the Veterans Administration’s hospital administrative service. Doctor Stilwell was a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was also a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators. While living in Los Angeles, he served as president of the Rotary club of that city. (Iowa City Press-Citizen; 1952)
