About
History:
Russell L. Brophy published a Los Angeles horse racing newspaper.
In 1950, Brophy testified before a U.S. Senate committee, and claimed that legislation to ban interstate transmission of gambling information will never stop the bookmakers. Mr. Brophy made the statements in telling the Senate commerce committee his business is legal in California. He denied that he represents the Continental Press Service which has been described as the fountainhead of racing news information for gamblers. He said he charged an average of about $25 a week for his information and has had as many as 150 customers. (Nevada State Journal (Reno) April 29, 1950).
