2330 N. Hillhurst is listed as the home of Harry Chandler, publisher of the Los Angeles Times in 1930. The son-in-law of LA Times founder Harrison Gray Otis, Chandler became the newspaper’s second publisher upon Otis’ death in 1917. Over the next 25 years, he also became a major property developer in Los Angeles and at one time owned most of the San Fernando Valley. He was a partner with movie director Mack Sennett in developing the “Hollywoodland” residential project in the Hollywood Hills that spawned the Hollywood Sign. He remained the publisher of the Los Angeles Times until his death in 1944. Harry Chandler was an LFIA Director from 1924 until 1931, and again from 1940 to 1944.
Harry Chandler was the Los Angeles Times publisher, Times Office, Los Angeles, California: born Landaff, New Hampshire, May 17, 1864, the son of Moses Knight and Emma Jane (little) C.; educated in the high schools of Lisbon, New Hampshire; married twice and has two children by his first wife, Franceska and Alice May, and six children by his second wife, Constance, Ruth, Norman, Harrison Gray, Helen Philip. Chandler began at the age of 21 as clerk of the circulation department of the Los Angeles Times. Organized syndicate and purchased 862,000 acres of land in Lower California in 1899 and was made President of the California-Mexico Land & Cattle Co., the property producing $18 million worth of cotton in 1919; he is an officer or director in 35 California Corporations including banking, land, transportation companies and oil, irrigation and manufacturing enterprises; is a Trustee in the California School of Technology, also trustee of Stanford University; he is a member of the Jonathan, University, Automobile, Athletic, San Gabriel Country, Flintridge Country Clubs, and was presented with a gold watch by Los Angeles Realty Board as the most useful citizen of Los Angeles in the year 1921; resides at 2330 Hillhurst Avenue, Los Angeles, Calif.
