About
History:
Gabrielle Redd, known professionally as Gogo DeLys, was a songstress of the 1920s and 1930s, and lived here in 1940 with her husband, Robert L. Redd. She began her career when a talent scout saw the young student perform in a show at USC where she had just begun the study of law. Soon, she joined the slim ranks of the pioneering “girl singers” and sang with the Jimmy Grier band. She eventually headlined at the famed Cocoanut Grove and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Blossom Room and Roof Garden. She toured the country with the Grier Band, then signed to appear in the Franchot and Markle Big Stage Shows, appearing with such talents as Fred Astaire and Dick Power.
Soon radio called and DeLys again pioneered with Kay Thompson as the first girl singers on “Your Hit Parade.” She also starred in other top shows of the day, and had her own program on NBC, “Gogo DeLys Sings.” She recorded for Brunswick Records and made numerous film shorts for both Paramount Pictures and Warner Brothers Vitaphone. While working in radio, she met her husband to be, NBC Los Angeles co-founder and advertising executive, Robert L. Redd. As Mrs. Redd, she devoted much of her time to owning and racing thoroughbred horses and to various charity groups including the National Charity League , the Assistance League, the Grey Ladies of the Veterans Administration Hospital, and the Social Service Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters. (Source: Los Angeles Times Obituary, February 25, 2003). 1940 Census: 2252 Bronson Hill Drive (Rents for $100): 1) Robert L.
