History:

This was the home of Rev. Edwin P. Ryland. Ryland was hired in 1918 as minister of the Mt. Hollywood Community Church after he was terminated as minister of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles because he was an open pacifist and did not support the First World War. Dr. Ryland brought to Mt. Hollywood a large number of his Methodist followers. This greatly increased Church membership despite a bad flu epidemic that closed all churches, schools and public places for eight weeks. Under his leadership in the 1920s the Church membership grew from 167 to 608. The Church enjoyed little competition as there were only four local churches in Los Feliz in 1924. Another boon for Mt. Hollywood Church was the subdivision of the 100 acre estate Arthur Letts estate bounded by Laughlin Park, Franklin, Edgemont and Los Feliz into some 300 smaller lots after his death in 1923. This area became a virtual magnet for many young new families who came to the Church. Under the leadership of Rev. Ryland, the Church turned increasingly worldly and liaised with a host of charitable organizations in the city. Unfortunately by 1926, Dr. Ryland’s star had risen so high, he became general secretary of the Church Federation of Los Angeles and had to resign from Mt. Hollywood.
