History:

1570 N. Sanborn Avenue was the home of sculptor Steven Gaal at the time of the 1930 US census. Gaal was born in Hungary in 1883, studied art in Europe and was responsible for a number of large public sculptures in Budapest (including the Elizabeth Bridge lions) before emigrating to New York. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1925, he established a studio at his home on Sanborn Avenue where he sculpted portrait busts and commemorative coins among other pieces of art. Eventually he continued in his forte, which is large public art. Among other works, he is responsible for the façade of the Citadel mall in the city of Industry off the Santa Ana Freeway, and the interiors of the Graumans Chinese and Pantages theatres.
