About
History:
Le Val Lund, Jr. graduated from John Marshall High School, and then attended Occidental College and Caltech. He served as an engineer in the U.S. Navy Seabees in the Pacific during World War II. He received his Masters degree in Civil Engineering from USC. In 1947 he began a 42-year career as a civil engineer with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP). He helped design, construct and operate many projects for the DWP including the Second Los Angeles Aqueduct, and numerous dams, filtration plants, reservoirs, water tanks, and pumping stations. He was the director of several different divisions at the DWP. During the record L.A. drought of 1977, he was the co-leader of a special DWP task force that assisted Mayor Bradley’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Water Conservation. That work resulted in the first water conservation plan and the language of the first water conservation ordinance for the City of Los Angeles – both are still in effect today. After he retired in 1989, Le Val became a recognized expert in the field of the impact of earthquakes on urban lifelines (systems for water supply, electricity, gas, sewerage and communications). He traveled worldwide visiting earthquake sites and provided consultation for various dam and water systems. (Source: LA Times Obituary, 2007)
