Greening of Griffith Park’s Grand Entrance
Together, let’s make the Upper Vermont Medians, the entryway to Griffith Park, a beautiful sight for Angelenos and tourists to experience.
LFIA, a long-time protector of trees throughout Los Feliz, is embarking on a fundraising campaign for sixteen drought-tolerant Silk Floss and Pink Trumpet trees to be planted in the Vermont medians. These beautiful pink-blooming trees can be seen in both Griffith Park and elsewhere in Los Feliz.
Cost of the project is $6,500, which would include the purchase and planting of the trees as well as irrigation to sustain them. “We invite the community to join us in the tree restoration campaign by donating to this neighborhood enrichment effort,” said Chris Laib, co-chair of LFIA’s Environment Committee.
Tree planting would be conducted by Los Angeles Conservation Corps. The Los Angeles City’s Department of Recreation and Parks and the Department of Water & Power would be responsible for tree maintenance on the Vermont medians.
According to LFIA Photo Archives, the medians were created in the 1910s and were lined with palm trees. There was a proposed plan to have the medians used as a streetcar service leading to the park, but that never materialized. In recent years, trees in the upper two medians were killed by drought. The new plantings will bring back the historic tree canopy entering the park.
“This project was suggested and shepherded by a longtime LFIA member living on Vermont, and we thank her for her engagement,” said Laib. “And we encourage others to become involved in this important restoration.”
