June 16, 2022 (Thursday)
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Midcentury Modern experts Alan Hess and Michael Murphy will talk about Googie-style coffee shops and diners Thursday, June 16, from 7-8 p.m. at the Architecture&Beyond Virtual Lecture Series.
To sign up for the free Zoom lecture, email the Los Feliz Library: firstname.lastname@example.org with “A&B” in the subject line.
Authors Hess and Murphy will discuss their new book, “Googie Modern: Architectural Designs of Armet Davis Newlove.” Louis Armet, Eldon Davis and Victor Newlove are considered the “fathers of Googie,” designers of the fun and futuristic restaurants originated in Southern California in the ‘50s. The ADN firm’s high-concepts set the scene for eating out SoCal-style.
The book showcases more than 175 renderings that became the iconic designs of legendary eateries such as Bob’s Big Boy, Norms and Denny’s. One of their space-age creations is the nearby Astro Coffee Shop on Fletcher Drive.
Hess, who has spoken numerous times at the Architecture&Beyond Lecture Series, has authored 20 books on Modern architecture. Murphy is a curator, designer and has written several books on Santa Monica.
“Googie Modern” is available for purchase online at Skylight Books. The link is: https://www.skylightbooks.com/event/architecture-and-beyond-los-feliz-library-5
