Save the Deodars
Thank you Los Feliz! Our “Save the Deodars” campaign successfully raised enough money to have all the Deodar cedars on Los Feliz Boulevard trimmed! Going forward we will continue to restore and maintain the historic and majestic mature evergreens that line the 2.2 miles of Los Feliz Boulevard from Western Avenue to Riverside Drive.
Thanks to your help and after an eight year tree trimming moratorium in Los Angeles due to budget cuts, 234 Los Feliz Blvd Deodar cedars were trimmed in a collaborative enterprise with the city’s Urban Forestry division.
Fall 2014 marked LFIA’s first fundraising effort as a 501(c)(3) non-profit association and we met our goal. We are delighted with the support and engagement of the Los Feliz community!
The Deodar trees that line the Boulevard have a long history in Los Feliz. William Mead planted the first Deodar cedars between Vermont and Western Avenue in 1922. The Los Feliz Women’s Club planted additional Deodar cedars on Los Feliz Boulevard east of Vermont Avenue in January 1934 to match the existing Deodars already planted west of Vermont Avenue.
The successful growth of the Deodars was a special concern for the LFIA from the association’s first years. The proposed widening of Los Feliz Boulevard in 1970 led the LFIA to launch a successful campaign to declare the trees an Historic Cultural Monument, thus saving the trees and preventing the Boulevard from becoming a freeway. Today the trees are recognized as Historic Cultural Monument #67.
Funds raised from our ongoing campaign will assist the LFIA in pruning existing trees, replacing diseased trees, and planting missing trees. Additionally, the LFIA plans to educate residents about the trees’ proper maintenance needs to ensure the trees remain healthy.
