The BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE, chaired by Tom Ford, is dedicated to maintaining the beauty of our neighborhood following in the footsteps of Margret Lohfeld, the former Chair who still participates.  Board members, neighbors, homeowners and friends clean up trash from problem areas, remove illegally posted signs and paint out graffiti on a regular basis. Each year the LFIA purchases, plants and maintains historic Deodar Cedar trees lining Los Feliz Blvd. Clean-up days are always Saturdays, from 9 am to 12 noon, with lunch provided afterwards. Watch for the dates and contact information to be announced in the Calendar section on the Home Page. Contact this committee at beautification@lfia.org. more...

The COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE chaired by Donald Seligman, is responsible for the Observer Newsletter, edited by Don Seligman and published three times yearly, and for the LFIA website, www.lfia.org. The newsletter delves focuses diverse areas of local interest such as Griffith park, traffic, education, crime, local history, and other community and LFIA issues impacting the Los Feliz community. The Observer can be emailed by request at observer@lfia.org. The website duplicates many of the goals of the newsletter, but also allows for a more complete description of the organization, the purchase of membership or LFIA sales items through PayPal, includes a calendar of current local events and links to other Los Feliz related sites, and includes an archive of past news as well as past issues of the Observer. Contact this committee at observer@lfia.org.

The HISTORY COMMITTEE’S mission is to document and preserve the history of our community by collecting old photos, conducting oral histories and surveying homes in the neighborhood. The committee, co-chaired by Marian Dodge, Lynne T. Jewell and Norman Mennes, hosts an annual Photo Day to collect old photos of residents and landmarks in the neighborhood for the LFIA Archives. This past year, LFIA published “Los Feliz: An Illustrated Early History” by Donald Seligman. The popular book may be purchased on the website at LFIA.org. The book and note cards featuring Los Feliz landmarks produced by the LFIA History Committee, are also for sale at local businesses, including Skylight Books. The History Committee’s Los Feliz Historical Survey is available at the Reference Desk at the Los Feliz Library for anyone interested in the history of their home and its architect.

The HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE orchestrates the refreshments served at the LFIA’s public meetings and events. To add to the LFIA program, hearty refreshments are served before the meetings, which gives our members an opportunity to visit with neighbors as well as enjoy something to eat before the 7:00 meeting. Margaret Goldsmith and Tess Nelson, co-chairs. The committee can be contacted by e-mail at hospitality@lfia.org.

The MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE, chaired by Denise Wingate, is responsible for soliciting membership in our association, collecting dues, keeping track of members who move away. Membership dues help finance our various projects such as planting trees, materials for graffiti and trash removal, printing costs of the Los Feliz Observer and the supporting of projects at the various schools in the Los Feliz area. Email this committee at membership@lfia.org.

The PARKS COMMITTEE, chaired by Chris Laib and Angela Stewart, is fighting to preserve Griffith Park and protect it from those who view it as a vast vacant land that somehow needs to be “improved.” Griffith Park, a de facto preserve within the limits of Los Angeles, and America’s largest urban park, is one of the few places where people can readily experience nature. It is the habitat to a variety of mammals, reptiles, and birds rarely seen in other parts of the city. It is also home to world-class cultural institutions, as well as abundant recreational facilities. Balancing all of these within the Park is a delicate matter.  In May, Griffith Park was granted Historic Cultural Monument status, which inoculates the vast majority of the park from irresponsible change and development.  The committee now focuses on further definition of HCM status, and deferential expansions of existing attractions.  The Los Angeles River project will be an additional focal point of our activities, the river being a vital natural component of Griffith Park and one of our eastern boundaries in Los Feliz.  Our primary objective is assuring that the Park and River remain a natural haven for future generations. The committee can be contacted by e-mail at parks@lfia.org.

The POLICE, FIRE and SAFETY COMMITTEE, co-chaired by Mark Stong and Jordan Susman works with Los Feliz residents, businesspeople, elected officials, private security companies, the LAPD and LA Fire Department, to identify and act upon matters of concern.  The committee coordinates with LAPD Senior Lead Officer for Los Feliz, Gina Chovan, to establish neighborhood watches and see that important information is shared.  We are committed to finding pragmatic solutions to the problems that affect our community and welcome your input. Please email this committee at police-fire-safety@lfia.org.

The PROGRAM COMMITTEE’S function is to provide the content for community meetings sponsored by LFIA as well as the LFIA General Membership Meeting.  The committee is chaired by Michael J. Widman.  Our goal is produce programs which educate and enrich our members and advance the best interests of the Los Feliz community. If you have suggestions for programs or speakers, please send an e-mail to program@lfia.org.

The SCHOOLS COMMITTEE, chaired by Marilyn Bush, continues its significant efforts to address the concerns and needs of our neighborhood campuses. Our hardworking group has fought to keep Los Feliz on the list of neighborhoods to get a new school that will relieve severe crowding at King Middle and Marshall High schools. The committee also assists with campus beautification efforts, supports specialized academic opportunities (FAME night at Franklin Elementary and the Academic Decathlon at Marshall High) and liaisons with administrators and elected officials regarding traffic and safety issues around neighborhood campuses. The Schools Committee can be reached at schools@lfia.org.

The TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE, chaired by Michael J. Widman, has a never ending job. Traffic congestion, limited parking and deteriorating infrastructure are ongoing systemic issues confronting the entire City.  This Committee monitors transportation-related developments that impact the Los Feliz area and works with City agencies and elected officials to explore potential solutions.  This Committee also advocates for the installation of new street lights in our area and the resurfacing of area streets.  Potholes should be reported by calling 311, 213-473-8410, and/or 800-996-CITY (800-996-2489).  Contact this committee at streets-traffic-parking@lfia.org.

The ZONING COMMITTEE’S battles are non-stop. Chaired by Ricardo Gomez, countless hours are spent meeting with City Planning and the Department of Building and Safety. We consistently monitor ongoing violations as well as address new problems that arise. From new commercial developments, over-height walls, illegal structures, to a lack of parking spaces for restaurants, we fight to see that the city’s building codes are upheld. The Zoning Committee can be reached at zoning@lfia.org.
